I learned this little piece of trivia on my own as a kid one morning when I was stuck at home from school sick with the flu while sitting on the couch, and got bored. With nothing better to do, I set on the monotonous task of systematically blacking out the entire screen and made a suprising discovery.
Finch is absolutely right about being able to completely black out an Etch-a-sketch and see inside it, although he's sadly mistaken about using this trick to keep Liska out of trouble.
Maybe he could have prevented the mess by telling her that it's contents are highly toxic like my parents told me; it's not true of course, but boy did I treat that thing carefully!
