If you have to tell a lie to save your skin that absolutely must be beliveable, there are two ways you can go about it: You can either make up something so embarrassing nobody would believe you'd lie about it ("I couldn't make it into work because my hemmorhoids were acting up again!') , or you can tell them something they want to believe so badly they won't question it ("We're not going to raise your taxes!").
Here Liska tries for the second, but it doesn't quite work out, despite Skippy's desire to forgive her. Unfortunately, it also helps to have at least a shred of credibility.
Liska's honest about one thing anyways. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for her to reform her ways after Santa has already come...
