No matter how bad things might get, Liska is always just a little bit gratified when she can point out the situation isn't entirely her fault...
A few readers were a little bit confused by Skippy's line in the fourth panel and to whom he was addressing. Some felt he was directly insulting Clarence by implying that he can't catch chickens; my actual intent was for him to inadvertantly reveal Liska's insincerity by indignantly pointing out that she's never caught a chicken before.
I don't think the joke suffers either way you choose to interpret it, but it does show how easily things can sometimes become ambiguous and confusing to the audience, even if actual meaning seems perfectly clear the writer.
